SUMMARY:Strawberry Festival Open Circle and Guest Jane Vogel
DESCRIPTION:Details regarding Strawberry Fest to follow soon. \n\n\n\nIn 1960\, West Granville Presbyterian Church brought two families to Milwaukee from Dutch Indonesia\, sponsoring them by finding them housing and jobs\, and welcoming them into the church family.  Jane Vogel Mantiri was the middle child in one of those families\, and has created a one-woman play called “See Jane Run: An Indo Story\,” which explains to today’s audiences what it is like to be an immigrant in America.  Although she came here in 1960 at age seven\, her story resonates today – in perhaps too many respects\, her story is timeless. \n\n\n\nJane will be performing her play on Thursday\, June 18 at 5:00 p.m. at the Milwaukee Historical Society\, 910 North Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Drive\, Milwaukee\, WI 53203.  We would love to see many of her West Granville family in the audience.  You can purchase tickets online at this site: \n\n\n\nhttps://milwaukeecountyhistory.square.site/product/-see-jane-run-an-indo-story-live-performance/JZLMPMRRGXX3RVPUARI2QDKS?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false \n\n\n\nNote that although the Adult Sunday School class has been reading her book of the same title\, the play and the book are not the same\, and the play can be appreciated without having read the book.  \n\n\n\nJane will worship with us on June 21\, and will stay after the service to answer any questions about the play\, her book or her life.  She has nothing but love for West Granville and its importance in her life and the life of her family\, as shown in the below letter that she wrote to West Granville in 2010 on the 50th anniversary of her coming to America.  That was long before she wrote her book or her play.  It will give you a foretaste of her book and her play: \n\n\n\nDear West Granville Presbyterian Church: \n\n\n\nYou know that “what if” moment when you let your mind wander\, and it goes to a place that you can’t fathom and you have to jar yourself to the present?  One of those moments for me is when I wonder\, “What if West Granville Presbyterian Church was not a part of my family’s history?” \n\n\n\n“What if?”  It is unimaginable.    When I reflect back on my life\, West Granville is at the core of my memories.  Here is my story. \n\n\n\nMy family is Dutch Indonesian\, a product of the colonization of the Dutch East Indies in the early 1800’s.  Our family was ousted from Indonesia after World War II and the Indonesian revolution that followed.  The exodus was painful and traumatic.  We were refugees with no home.  In 1955 we fled to the Netherlands and my family waited many years for a sponsor that would allow us entry into the United States.   West Granville Presbyterian Church answered the call to be our sponsor. \n\n\n\n50 years ago my family immigrated to the United States because a small congregation with a big heart\, a vision\, and deep faith made it possible.  It was August 21\, 1960\, my brother Rick’s 9th birthday.  I was 7 years old and my brother Les was 16 months old.     A difficult 11-day ocean voyage followed by a train trip from New York Harbor brought us from the Netherlands to Milwaukee. \n\n\n\nI remember that day as if it was yesterday.  The Hintz family met us at the train station.  Rick and I didn’t speak a word of English.  My mother told us that if we heard someone say\, “How are you?” we were to say “Fine”.   When I blurted my first “Fine” in the yellow Chevy Impala driven by Mr. Hintz\, I had no clue what it meant\, but it didn’t matter.  I was in awe of the huge luxury automobile\, the chatter of the Hintz children\, and the warm embrace from Mrs. Hintz.   They were strangers but they treated us like family.  This was only the beginning. \n\n\n\nThe church also sponsored my uncle Gus Vogel and his family. The church provided us with furnished apartments across the hall from one another.   Church members helped my father and uncle find employment.  They registered us in school\, took us to medical appointments\, and assisted with every aspect of the transition. \n\n\n\nRevered Edgar Bletcher was a second father and mentor to me.  He helped me with scholarships so I could attend Carroll College.  He comforted me through the trials and tribulations of adolescence.  He taught me to respect all faiths.  He taught me that a meal is not complete unless it has dessert.  To this day\, I never end a meal without dessert. \n\n\n\nMy parents immigrated to the United States so that we would be spared the hardships they endured.   Because of their sacrifice and the grace of this church my life has been richly blessed.   \n\n\n\nWords cannot express my love and gratitude for this church.   When I say the Lord’s Prayer\, I remember Sunday school at West Granville.  When I host potlucks\, I think about three-layer Jello rings\, baked beans and West Granville.  When I reflect on my career\, I think of Carroll College and West Granville.  When I think about God\, I see the faces of the West Granville families.  When I help others in need\, I recall being the beneficiary of West Granville’s generosity and compassion.  When I see my precious family thrive\, I am grateful to West Granville. \n\n\n\nAlthough my family’s journey was difficult\, it was overshadowed by the church’s countless gifts of love.   I sometimes wonder\, “What if?”  But I can’t fathom the thought.  So I jar myself to the present and thank God for the wondrous gifts I have been given.  \n\n\n\nWith gratitude and love\, \n\n\n\nJane Vogel \n\n\n\nhttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E48ACAA23A1F4CF8-63848742-police
